Whereas the first cruise focused on the pelagic communities (in the water column), the second one will investigate the benthic assemblages (what lives in, on or close to the seafloor).

Participants have worked incredibly hard this last week spending on average 12 hours per day at the world-class facilities generously provided by SAIAB (South African Institute for Aquatic Biodiversity). More than 200 species of fish and 74 species of squid have been identified during the workshop. Additionally, the fish larvae expert Peter Konstantinidis has identified the larval stages of approximately 30 fish species. Although there were far too many samples to work through during this workshop, many of the participants will continue working on them during the ensuing months. Phillip Boersch-Supan and Kirsty Kemp have extracted several hundred biological samples from fishes including stomach contents, otoliths, scales, muscle tissue and brain tissue. These will be used for various studies related to deep-sea fish ecology and physiology. Although the taxonomic data still need to be analysed, the principal scientist, Alex Rogers, expects to find interesting latitudinal differences in the composition of seamount-associated species. Given that this is the first time that these specific seamounts have been studied, this information and the anticipated publications arising from it, should greatly assist in the management of deep-sea ecosystems and allow us to gain a better understanding of how they function ecologically.

A new species of squid has been discovered!

Dr. Vladimir Laptikhovsky has discovered a new species of squid this week belonging to the chiroteuthid group of families. Members of this squid group are generally long and slender and are capable of remarkable bioluminescent displays. Some also have club-like photophores along their arms which are believed to act as lures to attract prey (similar to the anglerfish). More than 70 species of squid have been identified from the seamounts cruise samples thus far. Incredibly, this represents in excess of 20% of the global squid biodiversity! More information regarding workshop findings will be posted tomorrow, the last day of the workshop.

Picture 1: James Mclaine holds up a ‘humpback blackdevil’ Anglerfish (Melanocetus johnsoni). This fish dangles a bioluminescent light from its forehead in order to lure prey within gulping range. Because this method of feeding is so effective, this fish has little need of swimming muscles and hence the tiny body in relation to its ferocious-looking head.

Zooplankton, miniature aliens

During the seamounts cruise, specialized nets were regularly deployed to capture zooplankton; tiny creatures that drift in the open ocean and feed predominantly on even smaller plant-like organisms called phytoplankton. Zooplankton comprise several groups of small pelagic animals such as krill, jellyfish and fish larvae and because they are incredibly abundant, form an integral part of the marine ecosystem. Notably, they are the primary food source for a variety of fish and sea mammals including the largest animal on earth; the blue whale. The objectives of the plankton netting survey were primarily to determine species diversity and to estimate abundance around seamounts. Workshop participants Riaan Cedras and Gildas Todinanahary calculate the volume of zooplankton biomass per unit of water trawled over the seamounts (the collection net was fitted with a water-flow meter). Then they extract random samples from each lot (there are too many creatures to count, never mind identify!) and stare through their high-powered microscopes for hours on end to identify the tiny creatures.

Dr. Vladimir Laptikhovsky and Amy Taylor have been examining the Cephalopods (squids) collected during the seamounts cruise in 2009. There are around 300 species of squid that live in the open ocean and larger individuals tend to inhabit progressively deeper waters. Squid are considered the most highly developed of all invertebrates due to their sophisticated nervous and circulatory system, and the fact that they continue to survive in the absence of a hard outer shell. By squirting water out through their siphons, they dart through the water column and catch fish with their tentacles. Using this jet propulsion, they are capable of extreme speeds and some even launch out of the water to ‘fly’ for considerable distances. Their skins are covered in chromatophores which enable them to instantly change color to suite their surroundings and effectively become invisible when they need to. Some species are also able to eject dark ink into the surrounding water to temporarily confuse attacking predators.

In these first three days of the workshop, Vladimir and Amy have already identified approximately 30 different species… two of which have not been collected before in the Indian Ocean!

Picture 2: Some interesting examples of squid species: A) Onychoteuthis sp: This species is known for its elaborate hooks at the ends of its tentacles which aid it in grasping its prey more securely. B) Pyroteuthis margarititera: Being less streamline, this squid probably relies more on camouflage than speed. C) Pterygioteuthis giardi: The smallest species known to man! D) Cranchia scabra: Although probably quite slow, this squid has some elaborate defense mechanisms. Firstly, it can suck its head and tentacles into its mantel cavity! Next, it injects ink into the cavity and because the mantel is translucent, it is able to match the color of the surrounding water and become invisible. In case all this fails, it sports tiny spikes all along its outside which may irritate the alimentary canals of some predators.

Twenty one scientists and students representing seven countries have gathered in Grahamstown at the South African Institute for Aquatic Biodiversity (SAIAB) to identify some 7000 samples collected during the seamounts cruise in 2009. After familiarizing themselves with the laboratory facilities, participants eagerly fell in behind their microscopes and began working through intimidating rows of jars containing fishes, squids, zooplankton and other interesting creatures. Many specimens look similar to each other and scientists have to use elaborate morphological features such as muscle orientation and gut length to differentiate between them. Although no new species have been discovered as yet, the really interesting samples from the colder waters are still to be brought to the workbench during the ensuing week.

Second picture: Hatchetfish (Argyropelecus aculatus). These small (5cm), unusually shaped deep sea fish use bioluminescence (lights on their bodies) to escape predators. By matching the light intensity of their bodies with the light penetrating the water from above, the fish does not appear darker if seen from below and can therefore not be seen by predators.

Almost one full year on, the partners on the SW Indian Ocean seamounts project are ready to start the painstaking task of identifying and cataloguing many of the species sampled in the water column above the six seamounts visited during the 40-day expedition in late 2009.

From the nearly 7000 samples gathered, there are almost certainly going to be previously-undiscovered species as well as new information on where known species congregate, what they eat and how they behave.

The results of this exercise will not only have a scientific interest, but will directly feed into recommendations to help improve conservation and management of Indian Ocean resources and future management of deep-sea ecosystems in the high seas globally.

IUCN, on behalf of all the partners in the project (GEF, ASCLME, EAF-Nansen, ACEP, ECOMAR and the Zoological Society of London) as well as the Total Foundation and Censeam, who have financially supported this workshop, wish the taxonomists success in their endeavours and invite all interested parties to Watch This Space for breaking stories!

We have just had our last two trawls of the cruise, this afternoon at Walters Shoal. Although most species looked familiar, there are always some good surprises, and this catch included the first octopus of the expedition, a ghost looking squid and a tiny crustacean larva with impressive spikes. Nous venons de procéder à nos deux dernières pêches, cet après-midi sur Walters Shoal. Bien que la plupart des espèces nous était familière, il y a toujours quelques bonnes surprises, et cette capture a inclu la première pieuvre de l'expédition, un calmar fantôme et une minuscule larve de crustacé avec ses piquants impressionnants.

This makes us realise how close we are to the end of the expedition and to setting foot on land again after several weeks in a floating bumpy habitation. While all of us are looking forward to being back home, it also feels a bit unreal... In order to be connected with the atmosphere that is awaiting us, we have gone through a little redecoration of the ship. Cela nous fait réaliser que nous nous approchons de la fin de l'expédition et de notre premier pied à terre après plusieurs semaines dans une habitation flottante et instable. Si nous nous réjouissons tous de rentrer, cela semble un peu irréel... Aussi, afin de nous connecter à l'ambiance qui nous attend, nous avons entrepris de redécorer un peu le bateau.

Walters Shoal

We've left the southwest Indian Ocean Ridge on the 10th of December and steamed northward for two days in order to reach the last seamount that we will study during this cruise, south of Madagascar. The area that we have reached is called Walters Shoal - some sort of enormous underwater plateau, with areas as shallow as 10 meters from the surface! For our investigations, though, we had to go to deeper areas. One of the main reasons we have decided to come here is that the region is known to attract seabirds, and Barau's petrel in particular, that come to feed here at this time of year. We haven't encountered as many seabirds as expected... but at least, we're back in a warm and very pleasant climate. The water is now 21°C.
We've been fishing from one to seven AM this morning, and caught some beautiful specimens:

Nous avons quitté la ride ouest-indienne le 10 décembre, et avons transité en direction du nord pendant deux jours afin d'atteindre le dernier mont sous-marin que nous allons étudier pendant cette expédition, au sud de Madagascar. La région dans laquelle nous nous trouvons s'appelle Walters Shoal - c'est une sorte d'énorme plateau submergé, avec des parties se situant à seulement 10 mètres de la surface! Cela dit, pour nos investigations, il nous a fallu aller vers des eaux plus profondes. La raison qui nous a poussé à venir ici est principalement le petrel de Barau. Cette région est effectivement connue pour attirer les oiseaux marins, qui viennent se nourrir ici à cette saison. Nous n'avons finalement pas rencontré autant d'oiseaux que nous l'espérions... mais sommes au moins de retour dans un climat plus chaud et plus agréable. L'eau est maintenant à 21°C.

Nous avons pêché de une à sept heures du matin, et avons attrapé de beaux spécimens.

Phytoplankton of the Southwest Indian Ocean Ridge / Phytoplancton de la ride ouest-indienne

Phytoplankton (microscopic plants) produce half of the oxygen present in the Earth’s atmosphere. Phytoplankton obtain energy through the process of photosynthesis and are therefore restricted to the euphotic zone (depth of water in the ocean exposed to sufficient sunlight to allow for photosynthesis). Phytoplankton forms the base of the aquatic food web and the biomass, composition and distribution strongly influence the nature of oceanic food web dynamics. Without phytoplankton, there would be no life in the oceans... except for the species typically found at hydrothermal vents that do not live off solar energy (have a look at Kirsty’s presentation on the right if you are interested in these strange communities of species).

We found that diatoms formed the dominant phytoplankton group south of 36°S. They include the chain forming species belonging to the genus Pseudonitzschia and Chaetocerus; and large centrics such as Planktoniella and Coscinodiscus (see micrographs below). The stations north of Sapmer Seamount (including Atlantis Seamount) were characterized by low fluorescence, typical of tropical and subtropical water with low levels of nutrients (oligotrophic). The highest fluorescence was measured in the surface waters between the Subtropical Front and the Subantarctic Front around 40°S. In the Subantarctic water the important high latitude flagellate, Phaeocystis sp. (probably P. antarctica), made its appearance in large numbers, although diatoms remained the dominant group.

Le phytoplancton (plantes microscopiques) produit la moitié de l’oxygène présent dans l’atmosphère de la terre. Le phytoplancton obtient de l’énergie à travers le processus de photosynthèse, et se trouve de ce fait dans la zone euphotique (profondeur de la colonne d’eau exposée à suffisamment de lumière solaire pour permettre la photosynthèse). Le phytoplancton forme la base de la chaîne alimentaire aquatique, et sa biomasse, sa composition et sa distribution influencent de manière importante la nature des dynamiques de chaînes alimentaires océaniques. Si le phytoplancton n’existait pas, il n’y aurait pas de vie dans les océans… à l’exception de ces espèces que l’on trouve typiquement sur les cheminées hydrothermales, dont la vie ne dépend pas de l’énergie solaire (jetez un coup d’œil à la présentation de Kirsty sur la droite, si vous êtes intéressés par ces étranges communautés d’espèces).

Nous avons découvert que les diatomées formaient le groupe dominant de phytoplancton au sud de 36°S. Ce groupe inclut des espèces formant des chaînes telles que les espèces appartenant aux genres Pseudonitzschia et Chaetocerus; et des espèces à formes circulaires appartenant aux genres Planktoniella et Coscinodiscus (voir les micrographiques ci-dessous). Les stations situées au nord du mont Sapmer (et incluant le mont Atlantis) étaient caractérisées par une basse fluorescence, typique des eaux tropicales et subtropicales, contenant un niveau peu élevé de nutriments (oligotrophique). La fluorescence la plus élevée a été mesurée dans les eaux de surface entre la convergence subtropicale et la convergence subantarctique, autour de 40°S. Dans les eaux subantarctiques, les importants flagellés des hautes latitudes, Phaeocystis sp. (probablement P. Antarctica), sont apparus en grand nombre, bien que les diatomées soient resté le groupe dominant.

Melville

We've left the roaring forties to study Melville bank, the last seamount that we will be investigating on the southwest Indian Ocean Ridge. The wind and waves have accompanied us for a few days now, and our fishing night was rather... rock'n'roll! No doubt we have moved further north, as the species are very different from the ones we found on Coral. They are actually very similar to the species encountered on the first seamounts that we have studied - you may recognise these two hatchetfish and the squid?

Nous avons quitté les quarantièmes rugissants pour étudier Melville, le dernier mont sous-marin que nous allons investiguer sur la dorsale ouest-indienne. Le vent et les vagues nous accompagnent depuis quelques jours maintenant, et la nuit de pêche a été plutôt... rock'n'roll! Cela ne fait aucun doute que nous avons rejoint des eaux plus au nord, car les espèces sont très différentes de celles que nous avons trouvées sur Corail. Elles sont en fait très similaires aux espèces récoltées sur les premiers monts sous-marins que nous avons étudiés - vous reconnaissez peut-être les poissons hachette et le calmar?

Coral seamount / Mont sous-marin Corail

Coral Seamount was designated a voluntary Benthic Protected Area by the Southern Indian Ocean Deep-Sea Fishers Association because it hosted deep-sea corals. We found that the fauna of the waters surrounding Coral Seamount was different to the other seamounts we surveyed. A species of small cardinal fish (Rosenblattia) was found in deep water at night time. Species of fish usually associated with seamounts were not caught in our pelagic trawls but instead a species of rattail fish was found that occurs in Australia, New Zealand and the Madagascar Ridge. Small silvery lantern fish, Maurolicus were also common in the catches but squids were much less abundant and diverse. The crustacean fauna was also different with some large prawns taken in deeper trawls. We had crossed into quite different waters, much colder and more typical of the Sub-Antarctic regions than the waters north of the sub-tropical front. This also showed in the birds surrounding the ship which were dominated by Southern Ocean species such as wandering albatross, cape pigeons (photo) and prions. The weather also lived up to the fearsome reputation of the roaring forties. After a few days of relative calm we were punished by five days of gale force westerly winds that battered the ship for the last few days work at Coral Seamount and pursued us all the way to Melville Bank, 140nm to the north.

Parce qu’il abrite une communauté de coraux d’eaux profondes, le mont sous-marin Corail a été établi de manière volontaire comme une aire benthique protégée par l’association des pêcheurs en eaux profondes de l’océan Indien. Nous avons découvert que la faune habitant les eaux environnant le mont Corail était différente de celle que nous avions trouvée aux alentours des autres monts sous-marins étudiés. Nous avons trouvé un petit spécimen de l’espèce Rosenblattia pendant la nuit, à une grande profondeur. Nous n’avons pas attrapé d’espèces habituellement associées avec les monts sous-marins, et, à la place, avons pêché une espèce de poisson-à-queue-de-rat que l’on trouve généralement en Australie, en Nouvelle Zélande et sur la ride de Madagascar. Les petits poissons lanternes Maurolicus étaient nombreux, au contraire des calmars, peu abondants et divers. La faune de crustacés était également différente et comportait de larges crevettes venues de grandes profondeurs. Il est évident que nous avons rejoint des eaux plus froides et plus typiques des régions subantarctiques, différentes de celles que l’on trouve au nord de la convergence subtropicale. Les espèces d’oiseaux marins accompagnant le bateau, principalement des albatros hurleurs, des prions et des damiers du cap (photo), témoignent également du changement de climat. Malheureusement, le temps est resté fidèle à son effrayante réputation de « quarantièmes rugissant ». Après quelques jours de calme relatif, nous avons été punis par cinq jours d’un fort vent d’ouest qui a martelé le bateau pendant nos derniers jours au-dessus de Corail et en chemin vers le mont Melville, situé à 140mn au nord.

Whalebones on Coral / Os de baleine sur Corail

A stack of whalebones and mango tree branches has been sunk on Coral seamount today. Un tas d'os de baleine et de branches de manguier ont été coulé sur le mont Corail aujourd'hui.

Kirsty is preparing the transponder, the device that will allow us to find and recover the bones in two years time, when the second cruise is in the area. Kirsty est en train de préparer le transpondeur, cet appareil qui va permettre de retrouver les os dans deux ans, lorsque la seconde expédition sera dans la région.

We have spent the night fishing on Coral seamount, with a trawl going as deep as 900m. This deepest trawl was actually an amazing catch, and the bucket was overflowing with marine creatures. Among the species caught, some beautiful specimens of crustaceans.

This morning we've reached the southernmost seamount of all seamounts that we have planned to study, named Coral. This feature has been set aside on a voluntary basis as a benthic protected area by the Southern Indian Ocean Deepsea Fishers Association. As its name indicate, coral communities are thriving on it and are now protected from impacts of bottom fishing gear.
Nous sommes arrivé au-dessus du mont sous-marin le plus au sud des monts que nous avons planifié d'étudier. Il s'appelle Corail et a été établi de manière volontaire comme une aire benthique protégée par l'Assocation des pêcheurs des grands fond du sud de l'océan Indien. Comme son nom l'indique, des communautés de corail vivent sur ce mont, et sont maitenant protégés des impacts des chaluts.

Accompanied by seabirds, we have deployed two trawls during the day, at 800 and 600 meters depth respectively.

While we've caught many interesting creatures, the cutest was certainly this juvenile oreo, that bears some strange resemblance to... a dog!

It's been an intense fishing day on this "off-ridge" site! We've started with collecting species yesterday, and continued all night, together with the accompanying activities that include sorting the catch, labelling the specimens, extracting small samples for DNA analyis, photographying the species, and freezing or "ethanoling" them. We've started the whole cycle again in the afternoon.

As expected and to our great delight, the creatures in this area are very different from what we have seen until now.

Cela aura été une journée intensive de captures, sur ce site à l'écart de la ride ouest-indienne. Nous avons commencé à pêcher hier, et n'avons pas arrêté de la nuit. En effet, la pêche implique toute une gamme d'activités, qui inclut une procédure de tri de la capture, l'étiquetage des spécimens, l'extraction d'échantillons pour l'analyse génétique, la photographie des espèces et leur congélation ou leur '"ethanolisation". Nous avons recommencé le cycle dans l'après-midi.

Comme prévu, et pour notre plus grand plaisir, les créatures de cette région sont très différentes de celles que nous avons vues jusqu'à présent.

After close to two days of steaming, we have crossed the sub-tropical front and reached the off-ridge station we have planned to study. We are at about 41°C South, in what is known as the roaring forties... We were not extremely comfortable - at least some of us - with the idea of going to an area where the winds and the waves are famous for being quite rough. But thanks to our lucky stars, we are welcomed by calm waters, as well as a rather thick fog, which renders the atmosphere surprisingly unearthly. The air is colder and more humid, and the water temperature has dropped by 9°C! We are very curious to discover the creatures that thrive in the waters here, as we expect them to be very different from the species that we have seen until now.

Après près de deux jours de transit, nous avons passé la convergence subtropicale et atteint la station à l'extérieur de la ride ouest-indienne que nous avions planifié d'étudier. Nous sommes à environ 41°C sud, dans ce qui est communément appelé les quarantièmes rugissants... Nous n'étions pas extrêmement à l'aise - du moins certains d'entre nous - à l'idée de rejoindre une zone connue pour ses forts vents et ses fortes vagues. Cela dit, grâce à notre bonne étoile, nous avons été accueilli par des eaux calmes, ainsi qu'un brouillard assez épais qui a rendu l'ambiance étonnamment irréelle. L'air est plus froid et plus humide, et la température de l'eau a perdu 9°C! Nous sommes très curieux de découvrir les créatures qui vivent dans ces eaux, car nous nous attendons à ce qu'elles soient très différentes de ce que nous avons vu jusqu'à présent.

Pelagic sampling is a strenuous job, sorting catches in the middle of the night while the pressure is on with the next trawl coming up. Obviously small mistakes happen from time to time. This week we set about rectifying a rather large one. 6 feet to be exact. Le prélèvement d'espèces pélagiques est un travail fatiguant: triage des animaux capturés en pleine nuit et sous la pression de la prochaine capture qui va être amenée à bord. Inévitablement, des erreurs sont commises de temps à autre. Cette semaine, il s'est agi d'en rectifier une d'assez grande taille. Deux mètres, pour être exact.

As a reminder: about a week ago we caught an enormous Dealfish (Trachipterus sp.) - pictured here with our proud Chief Scientist - and when the follow-up trawl was hauled up and everything from the previous catch had to be put away in buckets and jars, there was no container quite the size of this intriguing creature. Pour petit rappel: nous avons capturé un trachyptère quelques jours auparavant - en photo ci-dessous avec notre fier scientific en chef. In the end it was put into the freezer as it was and it was not until sunrise (and two trawls later) that it dawned upon us, that this might not have been the ideal solution. En fin de compte, nous l'avons simplement déposée telle quelle dans le congélateur. C'est seulement au petit jour, et après deux filets additionnels, qu'il nous est venu à l'esprit que ça n'avait peut-être pas été la solution idéale.

Turns out the large fish and the ice cold metal freezer had an intense bonding session, and our dealfish was frozen solid to the shelf. In principle not too bad a thing to happen as loose things on a ship easily move about in rough weather and are prone to be damaged. However, after a couple of days first signs of freezer burn appeared on the fish and this was definitely not ideal. Il s'est avéré que l'énorme poisson et le congélateur métallique glacial s'étaient intimement rapproché - notre trachyptère s'était solidement gelé à l'étagère. Sur un bateau, ce n'est en principe pas une mauvaise chose, étant donné que les objets lâches ont tendance à bouger et risquent de s'endommager par mauvais temps. Thus we had to come up with a plan to separate the fish from the freezer without actually thawing the fish because that wouldn't have been any good either. Our rescue plan was very cunning indeed and it involved a short trip around the boat to commandeer some essential tools: A hot-air gun was found in the engineer's workshop, the largest knife taken from the galley (a 16-inch blade, swiss quality), black bin bags and duck tape from the lab and last but not least polar suits from our box with foul weather gear. Il nous a donc fallu monter un plan pour séparer le poisson du congélateur sans pour autant décongeler le poisson - ce qui n'aurait pas été une bonne idée. Notre plan de sauvetage était très rusé, et requit un petit tour du bateau pour réquisitionner quelques outils essentiels: un pistolet à air chaud dégoté dans l'atelier de l'ingénieur, le plus long couteau de la cuisine (une lame de 40cm de qualité suisse), des sacs poubelle, du ruban adhésif et pour finir nos combinaisons polaires et notre équipement pour mauvais temps.

Equipped with all this Kirsty and Philipp entered the icy-realms of the freezer room and started to work. Starting at the tail, the cold metal shelf was carefully warmed until the knife could be slipped underneath the fish and then a sheet of plastic was quickly pulled into the very narrow gap between fish and freezer. Inch by inch the two worked towards the head, until after almost an hour the fish was finally separated from its cold metal bedding. Equipés de tout cet attirail, Kirsty et Philipp sont entré dans la partie gelée du congélateur et se sont mis au travail. Now the fish is tightly wrapped in plastic, sealed with duck tape and hopefully in the best shape to make an ichthyologist happy, once we arrive in Port Elizabeth. We've caught another "black devilfish" - a female of about 10cm, a little more impressive than the previous one!

Suprising mating method
Anglerfish employ an unusual mating method. Because individuals are presumably locally rare and encounters doubly so, finding a mate is problematic. When scientists first started capturing deep-sea anglerfish, they noticed that all of the specimens were females. These individuals were a few centimeters in size and almost all of them had what appeared to be parasites attached to them. It turned out that these "parasites" were the remains of males.

At birth, males are already equipped with extremely well developed olfactory organs that detect scents in the water. When it is mature, the male's digestive system degenerates, making him incapable of feeding independently, which necessitates his quickly finding a female anglerfish to prevent his death. The sensitive olfactory organs help the male to detect the pheromones that signal the proximity of a female anglerfish. When he finds a female, he bites into her skin, and releases an enzyme that digests the skin of his mouth and her body, fusing the pair down to the blood-vessel level. The male then atrophies into nothing more than a pair of gonads, which releases sperm in response to hormones in the female's bloodstream indicating egg release. This extreme sexual dimorphism ensures that, when the female is ready to spawn, she has a mate immediately available.

Surprenante méthode d'accouplement
Les lophiiformes s'accouplent de manière peu commune. Etant donné le peu d'individus présents localement, et la rareté des rencontres, trouver un partenaire n'est pas chose aisée. Quand les premiers lophiiformes ont été capturés, les scientifiques se sont aperçus que tous les specimens étaient des femelles. Ces individus mesuraient quelques centimètres, et la plupart avait ce qui semblait être un parasite accroché à leur corps. En fait, ces "parasites" étaient des restes de mâles.

Dès la naissance, les mâles sont pourvus d'organes olfactifs extrêmement bien développés, capables de détecter des odeurs dans l'eau. Lorsque le système digestif du mâle est mature, il dégénère, rendant le mâle incapable de se nourrir de façon autonome. Aussi doit-il rapidement trouver une femelle lophiiforme pour ne pas mourir de faim. Le système olfactif sensible du mâle l'aide à détecter les phéromones signalant la présence d'une femelle à proximité. Lorsqu'il trouve une femelle, il lui mord la peau, et libère des enzymes qui digèrent la peau de sa bouche à lui et de son corps à elle. Le couple fusionne, au niveau des vaisseaux et du sang. Le mâle s'atrophie ensuite pour ne devenir plus qu'une paire de gonades, qui libère du sperme en réponse à des hormones dans le sang de la femelle indiquant qu'elle libère des oeufs. Ce diamorphisme sexuel extrême garantit à la femelle un conjoint disponible immédiatement lorsqu'elle est prête à frayer.

We've spent the last few hours on Sapmer bank before heading for Middle of What seamount, which we'll reach around lunch time tomorrow. Sapmer bank has been a really exciting site. We've collected many animals and a great diversity of species, cephalopods in particular. We've also seen our first anglerfish, the famous "black devilfish" portrayed as the monster of the deep... It's indeed quite scary, with its 2 centimeters length...

Sapmer is very different from Atlantis seamount. While Atlantis looks like the ideal cone-shaped seamount with one summit plateau, Sapmer is a rugged structure with many pinnacles and a complex topography. Its plateau is also much larger than Atlantis's and rock falls can be quite clearly seen along its flanks.

We've gathered some initial evidence that the tides may be washing deep cold currents up the slopes of the seamount and bringing rich and productive water to the top of the seamount, acting like an upwelling. We have also seen very high levels of fluorescence above the seamount coming from rich populations of phytoplankton (microscopic marine plants). This may explain why we have seen great abundances of filter feeding gelatinous animals like salps around Sapmer seamount and why we have seen such a high diversity of other creatures, including predators such as seabirds and whales - one of which was observed today. One thing is certain though, the two seamounts we have seen so far are very different to each other. We look forward to the Middle of What with anticipation of new discoveries!

Nous avons passé nos dernières heures au-dessus du mont sous-marin Sapmer avant de nous diriger vers le mont Middle of What, que nous atteindrons demain midi. Sapmer aura été un site réellement fascinant. Nous avons récolté de nombreux animaux et une grande diversité d'espèces, de céphalopodes en particulier. Nous avons également vu le premier lophiiforme du voyage, le fameux poisson présenté comme le monstre des abysses... Il est effectivement assez effrayant, du haut de ses 2 centimètres...

Le mont sous-marin Sapmer est très différent d'Atlantis. Alors qu'Atlantis représente une sorte d'idéal-type à forme conique avec un plateau au sommet, Sapmer est une structure escarpée, avec de nombreux pitons rocheux et une topographie complexe. Son plateau est également bien plus vaste que celui d'Atlantis, et des restes d'éboulements sont visibles sur ses flancs.

Nous avons collecté les premiers indices tendant à démontrer que les marées pourraient faire remonter les courants froids et profonds le long des versants de Sapmer, et ainsi amener des eaux riches et productives sur la surface du mont - agissant comme un upwelling. Nous avons également observé des niveaux très élevés de fluorescence au-dessus du mont provenant des riches populations de phytoplankton (ces plantes marines microscopiques). Cela pourrait expliquer l'abondance d'animaux filtreurs gélatineux tels que les salpidae autour de Sapmer, ainsi que la grande diversité d'autres créatures marines, incluant les prédateurs tels que les oiseaux marins ou les baleines - dont on a vu un individu aujourd'hui. Une chose est sûre, les deux monts que nous avons visité jusqu'à présent sont très différents l'un de l'autre. Nous nous réjouissons des probables découvertes à venir au-dessus de Middle of What.

Phronima & salpidae

Some albatrosses have been following the ship for a few days now. More than 40 can be seen at a time! Oddgeir managed to take a unique picture of them feeding on a big squid. We have indeed seen many squids on Sapmer, and some impressive ones. They are known to be big predators on seamounts.
Cela fait quelques jours que des albatros suivent le bateau. Il est possible d'en voir jusqu'à 40 en même temps! Oddgeir a réussi à prendre une photo unique de ces albatros en train de se nourrir d'un énorme calmar. Nous avons effectivement vu beaucoup de calmars sur Sapmer - et certains de taille impressionnante. Ils sont connus pour être de grands prédateurs des monts sous-marins.

A little story about phronima

Phronima is a little deep-sea transluscent animal that looks like a shrimp. It uses dead salps (barrel-shaped free floating animals) as shelters, a bit like hermit crabs do, except that salps are gelatinous and transparent. The first picture shows a phronima (collected on November 17). The second picture (taken on 23 November), quite uncommon, shows a phronima in its salp housing. Little brown eggs can be observed inside the salp.

Phronima est un petit animal ressemblant à une crevette que l'on trouve dans les fonds des océans. Il utilise des salpidae morts (des animaux ressemblant à des tonneaux flottant dans l'océan) comme abri pour se protéger - un peu à la façon des bernard l'hermite, à la différence que les salpidae sont transparents et de texture gélatineuse. L'image du haut montre un phronima (pêché le 17 novembre). La seconde image (prise le 23 novembre), plutôt peu commune, montre un phronima dans un salpidae. Des petits oeufs marrons sont visibles à l'intérieur du salpidae.

Today is a steaming day again. We've just passed over several seamounts that we believe to be unnamed features. The image above represents one of them - an acoustic picture of the underwater mountain and the schools of organisms around it, in deeper and shallower waters (what is called the deep/shallow scattering layers).
We've arrived on Sapmer bank at 11.30pm, and will start with some oceanographic measurements before we undertake some fishing activities tomorrow.

Aujourd'hui est de nouveau un jour de transit. Nous sommes passé au-dessus de plusieurs monts sous-marins, et pensons que ces formations n'ont probablement pas encore été nommées. L'image ci-dessus représente l'une de ces formations - il s'agit d'une image acoustique de la montagne sous-marine entourée de ses bancs d'organismes marins, qui se situent tant dans les eaux plus profondes (deep scattering layer) que dans les eaux plus proches de la surface (shallow scattering layer). Nous sommes arrivé à Sapmer bank ver 23h30, et commençons par entreprendre des mesures océanographiques avant de nous mettre à la pêche demain.

Fishing for science operations have started on the evening of the 18th for a full 12 hours, during which 9 nets have been deployed. Many animals and a variety of species are caught, including a giant fish: a dealfish measuring, from head to tail, no less than two meters!

We've spent the night until early morning fishing and sorting the creatures caught. The afternoon was thus rather quiet, and the only scientists on duty were Patrick and Etienne, our birdwatchers.

Les opérations de pêche pour la science ont commencé dans la soirée du 18 et duré 12 heures, pendant lesquelles nous avons déployé 9 filets. De nombreux animaux et une diversité d'espèces ont été capturées, ainsi qu'un poisson géant: un trachyptère mesurant rien de moins que 2 mètres de long, de la queue à la tête!

Nous avons passé la nuit à pêcher et trier les captures jusqu'au petit matin. Aussi, l'après-midi a été plutôt tranquille. Les seuls sur le qui-vive étaient Patrick et Etienne, nos observateurs d'oiseaux.

Since we have reached the southwest Indian Ocean Ridge, we've been very lucky with seabird observations. In the picture below, each albatross is a different species (wandering, yellow nose & shy albatross)! It is not so easy to recognise the species, especially as birds change plumage as they grow. But under Patrick's eagle eye, no details is missed.

Depuis que nous avons atteint la ride ouest-indienne, nous avons été particulièrement chanceux avec les observations d'oiseaux marins. Dans l'image ci-dessous, chaque albatross représente une espèces différente (albatros hurleur, à bec jaune et timide)! Il n'est pas aisé de reconnaître l'espèce, d'autant plus que les oiseaux changent de plumage en grandissant. Mais aucun détail n'échappe à Patrick.

Whales and mangos on Atlantis / Des baleines et des mangues sur Atlantis

Kirsty spent part of the day preparing her whale bones, accompanied with thick branches of mango tree, to be sunk on Atlantis seamount. As explained in the slideshow on the right, Kirsty is interested in studying the communities of the deep - worms in particular - that develop on the bones and the wood. She hopes that there will be something left in two years time, when the second cruise comes out and recovers to bone for analysis.

Kirsty a passé une bonne partie de la journée à préparer ses os de baleine, accompagnés d'épaisses branches de manguier, pour les faire couler sur le mont sous-marin Atlantis. Comme expliqué dans le diaporama à droite, Kirsty s'intéresse à l'étude des communautés abyssales - dont les vers en particulier - qui se développent sur les os et le bois. Elle espère qu'il restera quelque chose dans deux ans, lorsque la deuxième expédition viendra récupérer les os pour les analyser.

Atlantis

We've reached Atlantis seamount around 6am this morning. You can definitely tell that we've travelled southward: the temperature has dropped by a few degrees, the wind is stronger, the sky more cloudy and the waves higher. The visible wildlife is also different... and we have the chance to see an impressive and majestic seabird: a wandering albatross!

Nous sommes arrivés au mont sous-marin Atlantis vers 06h00 ce matin. Impossible de ne pas se rendre que nous avons voyagé vers le sud: la température a chuté de plusieurs degrés, le vent est plus fort, le ciel plus nuageux et les vagues plus hautes. La faune visible est également différente... et nous avons la chance de voir un impressionnant et majestueux oiseau marin: un albatros hurleur!

Seamounts, whales and worms / Monts sous-marins, baleines et vers

Today is a steaming day. We're all excited, as we know that we'll be above the first seamount of the expedition - named Atlantis - as we wake up tomorrow. We will be spending three full days measuring and sampling on and around the feature... while Kirsty will be sinking some whale bones!

The team has had a chance to be given a presentation by Kirsty on whale falls and the fascinating communities that develop and thrive on the carcasses. If you want to know more about that, too, and see the weird colourful bone-eating worms, have a look at the slideshow on the right!

Aujourd'hui est un jour de transit. Nous sommes tous excités à l'idée de savoir que nous allons nous réveiller demain matin au-dessus du premier mont sous-marin de l'expédition, nommé Atlantis. Nous passerons trois jours à mesurer et à investiguer cette formation et ses alentours... pendant que Kirsty s'occupera de faire couler des os de baleines!

First catch / Première capture

Just after midnight, the net with our first catch of marine species from the high seas of the Indian Ocean is hoisted on the back deck of the ship. It contains about 30 species, including three species of squids and two species of fish - a hatchet fish (top image) and a light fish (bottom image).

Peu après minuit, le filet contenant notre première capture d'espèces marines des eaux internationales de l'océan Indien est hissé sur le pont arrière du bateau. Une trentaine d'espèces sont récoltées, dont trois espèces de calmars et deux espèces de poissons - un poisson hachette (image du haut) et un poisson luminescent (image du bas).

Like a Friday 13 / Comme un vendredi 13

Friday 13 November unfortunately kept true to its reputation - a day of bad luck. Just before 6pm, after a whole day of steaming, the team starts to get quite excited: the first deployment of scientific equipment is about to take place. The ADCP and the CTD, that measure ocean currents, temperature and depth, are sent down to 1500m depth. When retrieving the devices an hour later, we have a bad surprise. We discover that the box containing the batteries for the ADCP collapsed under the pressure. We are now investigating to try to understand what happened. Luckily enough, we will be able to continue the work as we have a spare piece of equipment.

Patrick and Etienne, our seabird guys, are on watch since 6am this morning. In the afternoon, they see two flocks of about 500 sooty terns each - the most common species of seabirds in the western Indian Ocean.

Le vendredi 13 novembre est malheureusement resté fidèle à sa réputation - un jour de malchance. Peu avant 18h00, après une journée entière de navigation, on sent de l'excitation dans l'air: l'équipe est sur le point de déployer l'équipement scientifique pour la première fois depuis le départ. Le courantomètre (ADCP) et la sonde CTD, qui mesurent les courants océaniques, la température et la profondeur, sont envoyés à 1500m de profondeur. Lorsque les appareils sont récupérés une heure plus tard, nous avons une mauvaise surprise. Nous découvrons que la boîte contenant les batteries n'a pas supporté la pression et a implosé. Nous menons l'enquête pour comprendre ce qui a pu se passer. Heureusement, nous pourrons continuer le travail, car nous avons un appareil de rechange.

Patrick et Etienne, nos spécialistes oiseaux marins, sont le qui-vive depuis 6h00 ce matin. Dans l'après-midi, ils ont la chance de voir deux groupes de 500 sternes fuligineuses - l'espèce la plus répandue dans le sud-ouest de l'océan indien.

Tension mounting / La tension monte

Tension's in the air and some people look quite nervous - our chief scientist, Alex Rogers, in particular. The ethanol, which was supposed to fly in from Mauritius at noon, is not on the expected flight. For a few hours, we do not know whether we will be able to leave today or not. The scientific plans are kept open to be adapted to further possible reduction of our time at sea. A precious day of beautiful and calm weather has already been lost. Finally, at 3.30pm, we get the good news: the ethanol has landed, and we will be able to depart at 6.30pm. It seems that if we are extremely lucky with the weather, this lost time will not affect the initial scientific plans.

Just before 7pm, as we are leaving the port, we see the horizon opening up in front of us. This moment is very particular and moving. We really all are on the same boat, now, and realise that we won't see land or civilisation before quite some time.

L'atmosphère est tendue, et quelques personnes ont l'air nerveux. Notre scientifique en chef, Alex Rogers, en particulier. L'éthanol, qui était supposé arriver de l'île Maurice à midi, n'est pas à bord du vol prévu. L'espace de quelques heures, nous ne savons pas si nous pourrons partir aujourd'hui ou non. Le programme scientifique est maintenu ouvert, afin de pouvoir l'ajuster à une possible diminution supplémentaire de notre temps en mer. Nous avons déjà perdu un jour précieux de temps beau et calme. Enfin, à 15h30, nous apprenons la bonne nouvelle: l'éthanol a atterri, et nous pourrons partir vers 18h30. Si nous avons beaucoup de chance avec le temps ces prochaines semaines, ce temps perdu ne devrait pas avoir d'impact sur le programme scientifique initial.

Peu avant 19h00, alors que nous sommes en train de quitter le port, nous voyons l'horizon s'ouvrir devant nous. C'est un moment très particulier et émouvant, pendant lequel nous réalisons également que nous ne verrons pas de terre ou de civilisation avant un bon bout de temps.

A quiet day / Une journée calme

The day starts off with a security training for the whole scientific team. Philipp happily volunteers to try on the survival kit. Now we just all hope that will not have to resort to using it!

L'équipe scientifique débute sa journée par une formation sur la sécurité à bord. Philipp se porte joyeusement volontaire pour la démonstration de l'utilisation de la combinaison de survie. Maintenant, nous espérons seulement ne pas avoir à nous en servir!

If everything goes well, today is our last chance to set foot on land before a few weeks. Kirsty, Philipp and Tom also take the opportunity to visit from within what will be our working field for the next 40 days, and discover the beauties of Reunion's underwater world.
Si tout se passe comme prévu, aujourd'hui est notre dernière chance de mettre pied à terre avant plusieurs semaines. Kirsty, Philipp et Tom saisissent cette opportunité pour visiter de l'intérieur ce qui sera notre terrain de travail pour les 40 prochains jours, et découvrir les beautés qu'offre le monde sous-marin réunionnais.

The vessel's popular! / Le bateau a la cote!

After a slightly chaotic departure (caused by late bus arrival and heavy traffic jam in St-Denis due to road closures), the team finally gets to Le Port and discovers its new home for the next fourty days: the Dr Fridtjof Nansen.

Although it is quite an exciting moment, we do not have much time to get familiar with the vessel and unpack before some four classes from St-Denis (about 95 children) that we invited show up for a visit of the ship. Two groups of ten kids at a time are taken round the boat and are shown everything from the laboratories, the acoustic room, the research equipment, the kitchen, the dining room, the wheelhouse, to the TV/library area and the gym. They seem to enjoy this visit a lot, and the testing of the shiphorn in particular!

A few journalists from the press and the local television are also present, and get a chance to visit the vessel, interview the scientists and some of the school kids.

Today is also the day when the Norwegian vessel crew that will accompany us on our voyage arrives, replacing the team that has just finished its 40-days on the vessel.

While the weather is amazing, there is one cloud on the horizon: we have just been informed that we won't be able to sail off tomorrow as planned. We are expecting 1000 litres of ethanol from South Africa, that can however not be transported to the ship before November 12. The alcohol, used for preservation of species collected, is considered a hasardous substance and is not allowed on the roads during a bank holiday. This is how we learned that November 11 was a bank holiday on Reunion island! Tough luck. At least, the departure on the 12th is confirmed.

Après un départ un peu chaotique (causé par l'arrivée tardive du bus et des bouchons à St-Denis liés à des fermetures de routes), l'équipe arrive finalement au Port et découvre ce qui sera son "chez soi" pour les quarante prochains jours: le Dr Fridtjof Nansen.

Bien que le moment soit assez excitant, nous n'avons que peu de temps pour nous familiariser avec le bateau et défaire nos valises, car bientôt arrivent les quatre classes que nous attendions (environ 95 écoliers) de St-Denis pour une visite du bateau. Les scientifiques font faire le tour du navire aux enfants, divisés en groupe de dix. Ils visitent tous les recoins du bateau, de la cale à la cabine de pilotage, en passant par les labortoires, la chambre acoustique, la cuisine, la salle à manger, le salon avec sa télévision et sa librairie et la salle de gym. Les manipulations scientifiques et l'équipement qui sera déployé pour la recherche leur sont également présentés. Ils semblent beaucoup apprécier la visite, et en particulier l'activation du klaxon du bateau!

Quelques journalistes de la presse et de la télévision sont également présents sur les lieux, pour un visite du bateau et l'interview de scientifiques et d'élèves des classes réunionnaises.

Aujourd'hui arrive également l'équipage norvégien qui opère le bateau, et qui nous accompagnera dans notre périple. Elle remplace l'équipe sortante, qui vient de passer 40 jours en mer.

Une seule ombre au tableau: nous venons d'apprendre que le bateau ne pourra pas mettre les voiles demain, comme prévu. Alors que nous attendons 1000 litres d'éthanol en provenance d'Afrique du sud, nous apprenons que la livraison ne pourra être acheminée vers le port avant le 12 novembre. L'alcool, utilisé pour la préservation des espèces récoltées, est considéré comme une substance dangereuse, interdite sur les routes les jours fériés. C'est ainsi que nous apprenons que le 11 novembre est un jour férié à la Réunion! Pas de chance! Au moins, le départ pour le 12 est confirmé.

Plan finalisation / Finalisation du programme

The scientific team is now complete and can finalise the cruise plans. It represents a group of 15 people of 10 different nationalities and several areas of expertise, ranging from oceanography to seabirds, and from fish to phytoplankton to deep-water corals. It is the first time that we all have a chance to meet.

The itinerary is being revisited, and the precise stations chosen. 12 spots will be surveyed, including 6 seamounts and an area beyond the subtropical front, in the subantarctic. Most stations will include oceanographic work (currents, temperature, depth, salinity and oxygen), biodiversity studies of species ranging from microscopic phytoplankton to the bigger fishes and acoustic surveys to determine biomass. As this area has barely been surveyed for biodiversity, we expect to find quite a few species new to science.

The schedule is full, and operations onboard take place 24 hours per day. It looks like we won't have time to get bored!

L'équipe scientifique est maintenant au complet et peut finaliser le programme de l'expédition. Elle représente un groupe de 15 personnes de 10 nationalités différentes et de champs de compétences variés, allant de l'océanographie aux oiseaux marins, et des poissons au phytoplankton et aux coraux d'eau profonde. C'est le première fois que l'équipe se rencontre dans son entier.

L'itinéraire est rediscuté, et les stations de recherches précises sont identifiées. 12 aires seront étudiées, incluant 6 monts sous-marins et une zone au-delà du front sub-tropical, dans la zone sub-antarctique. Des études océanographiques (courants, température, profondeur, salinité et oxygène), des analyses de la diversité des espèces marines allant du phytoplankton microscopique aux grands poissons, ainsi que des études acoustiques pour déterminer la biomasse seront entreprises à la majorité des stations. Etant donné que cette région a très peu été étudiée pour sa biodiversité, nous nous attendons à découvrir un certain nombre d'espèces nouvelles pour la science.

Le programme est complet, et les opérations à bord se font 24/24. Nous n'aurons certainement pas le temps de nous ennuyer!

The first half of the scientific team has made its way to Reunion island. It is busy discussing cruise plan preparation, under Alex Rogers's chairmanship, our chief scientist. The itinerary is being revisited and the detailed work at each station refined.

2009 Seamounts cruise / Expédition monts sous-marins

Onboard the Norwegian research vessel Dr Fridtjof Nansen, a team of the world's leading experts, paired with scientists from the region, will investigate seamounts in the international waters of the Indian Ocean. Starting its voyage on November 11, 2009 at Reunion Island, the vessel will sail off towards the southwest Indian Ocean Ridge to study five seamounts located between 32°00' S and 41°00' S, and end its journey forty days later, in Port Elizabeth, South Africa.

A bord du navire de recherche norvégien Dr Fridtjof Nansen, une équipe d'experts de renommée internationale sera accompagnée de scientifiques de la région pour étudier les monts sous-marins des eaux internationales de l'océan Indien. Débutant son voyage le 11 novembre 2009 à la Réunion, le bateau mettra les voiles en direction de la ride sud-ouest indienne pour étudier cinq monts sous-marins situés entre les latitudes 32°00' S et 41°00'S, pour finir son voyage quarante jours plus tard à Port Elizabeth en Afrique du sud.
